Why I want to travel – the beginning of Footsteps on the Globe

How it started…the beginning of Footsteps on the Globe

It was early 2014 and I was approaching my twenty sixth birthday. As many 20-somethings will appreciate, I started to reevaluate life as I came ever closer to the big 3-0. What did I want to do with my life?

At the time I was in an ‘in-between’ of sorts. I was in a job that was making me miserable for a start. Plus, the instability of the job meant I was financially restricted from making long-term plans.

The industry just wasn’t right for me.

Health and safety and asbestos removal is hardly a subject many people are passionate about. But it turns out trying do the marketing for these services with no budget is also a passion removal in itself!

Is there any wonder that the people I worked with were also miserable and lacking enthusiasm? I decided to cut my losses a few months in and embark on a new path.

I made the right decision.

Turning a corner…

Within a few weeks, I got a new marketing job that I loved in education. The industry was a joy for me as I found that I loved working with kids.

I got to write the most inspiring student success stories and worked with a lovely team. I even had my marketing campaign designs on the side of buses going all over Manchester. It was pretty cool!

After settling into the job, I started focusing on my long-term plans again.

Less than three months later, I took my first trip to Kefalonia in Greece and I was hooked!

On this trip, I swam in the clearest seawater I had ever been in and experienced so many firsts. From kayaking and snorkelling in the open ocean to seeing wild loggerhead turtles and tours exploring caves and an hidden ancient lake.

It was one of the best experiences of my life.

When I got back I knew I wanted to spend as much time exploring the world as possible. Going as often and as far as my piggy bank would allow!

I was fortunate growing up that I travelled a lot for my Dad’s job. Moving to different countries every two to three years with my family, experiencing a lot of different cultures and ways of life. I didn’t appreciate it at the time but I’m so grateful for the experience now!

However, between leaving university and some bad work experiences right out the gate (cheers recession!), I lost my love of travel.

But now – my travel fire is well and truly lit!

Bringing Footsteps on the Globe to life…

So after drawing inspiration through countless travel blogs, books and YouTube videos, I have decided to start this travel blog as a promise to myself.

I vow to travel and explore as far, wide and often as I can. Plus, it’ll serve as a pretty cool log of where I’ve been and what I’ve been up to.

And you never know, if I inspire another 20-something in their ‘in-between’ to shake things up by travelling more then that will be pretty cool too!

Here’s to the beginning of Footsteps on the Globe!
