Choccywoccydoodah review: Chocolate heaven in Brighton!

Choccywoccydoodah is a real-life Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Where a team of chocolatiers are on a mission to create the most extravagant and sumptuous chocolate covered cakes you’ve ever seen!

Here’s what happened when I stepped into chocolate heaven at Choccywoccydoodah in Brighton.

ABOUT Choccywoccydoodah

Choccywoccydoodah is a wonderful boutique chocolate shop based in the seaside town of Brighton which was made famous by its self-titled reality show on the Good Food Channel.

Opened in 2001, the shop has enthralled, delighted and seduced visitors with the most extravagant cake designs for over two decades. These include many famous clients such as Tim Burton, Whoopi Goldberg, Boy George, Elton John and Kylie Minogue!

Their chocolate recipes and techniques are so unique – they’re top secret! Only Choccywoccydoodah’s own chocolatiers are in the know of how to make their outlandish chocolate creations.

All their chocolatiers are trained fine artists who are then taken under Choccywoccydoodah’s wing to learn how to create the masterpieces out of chocolate you seen adorned in the shop window today.

The idea behind choccywoccydoodah

From the minute you walk into Choccywoccydoodah you know in an instant that it isn’t like any other chocolate maker.

It’s not a chain or corporation, the chocolate creations inside have been a labour of love.

The shop has got an interesting history too. The idea behind Choccywoccydoodah was to open it next to a cafe owned by business partners Christine Garrett and Christine Taylor.

Originally to be named, The Chocolate Factory; it wasn’t until the pair got drunk on a bottle of gin before they decided, ‘Choccywoccydoodah’ was a much more fun name!

…and they haven’t looked back since!

The Choccywoccydoodah Experience

For these maverick chocolatiers, their goal is to create the most fantastical chocolate creations which make them so different from any other chocolate shop.

The recipes have been handed down over three generations which is the secret technique for their chocolate sculptures. Some of which even featured in Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie. Just incase you needed another reason to go! 😉

With such star power between their celebrity clients and their reality show, it’s amazing that the shop has stuck to its humble roots in Brighton. Yet still fills over 7,500 cake orders every year!

One of my favourite stories about Choccywoccdoodah was how they made Johnny Depp a huge Pirates Of The Caribbean-themed chocolate bar when his film was nominated for an Oscar.

It was so detailed, that when they flew it to Paris to present it to him, it couldn’t be entrusted to the baggage hold. So it was decided to give the chocolate bar its own seat on the plane!

But it’s all in a day’s work for the team at Choccywoccydoodah! Specialising in creating designs which are truly unique and at times a little odd (as you can see below!).

But Choccywoccydoodah does far more than just make bespoke cakes for celebs. They also have a tea room upstairs with cakes covered in thick chocolate icing!

My best friend and I decided to treat ourselves to a little calorie fest on our recent trip to Brighton after reading rave reviews.

We thought that Choccywoccydoodah would be the perfect place for afternoon tea – and we weren’t disappointed!

What I found most charming about Choccywoccydoodah when I visited was how inconspicuous and cosy it is inside.

It’s like a tea room straight out of Alice and Wonderland, with rows of colourful cakes covered in decadent chocolate. It’s absolute chocolate heaven!

My best friend Tam enjoyed chocolate cake with white chocolate icing. Whilst I opted for the white chocolate sponge cake with vanilla ice cream and Turkish delight pieces. It was immense!

The contrast between the creamy chocolate outer layer with the light, spongy cake is a match made in dessert heaven! Combined with the Turkish delight pieces and ice cream, it was honestly one of the best cakes I’ve ever had.

This isn’t just any chocolatier, this is Choccywoccydoodah!
