1) The fascinating history

Liverpool’s rich history with music, sports, and cultural heritage makes it a must-visit destination for travellers seeking a dynamic and immersive city break! The city’s history for me is one of the main reasons why Liverpool is worth visiting – it’s so interesting and diverse!

As a port city, steeped in centuries of maritime heritage, Liverpool is loaded with stories waiting to be discovered! With tales of trade, exploration, and immigration echoing through its historic docks and warehouses.

Visitors can explore the city’s medieval streets, marvel at its grand Victorian buildings, and uncover hidden gems tucked away in its vibrant neighbourhoods.

From the majestic Liverpool Cathedral and the iconic Royal Liver Building to the historic Georgian Quarter and the picturesque Penny Lane immortalised by The Beatles, Liverpool’s city centre offers a fascinating glimpse into the shaping of its vibrant present.

You can find out more about Liverpool’s historical port and waterfront on the Liverpool: Guided City Walking Tour.

In addition to its maritime history and music heritage thanks to the legendary Beatles, Liverpool also boasts a proud sporting heritage. With two Premier League football clubs, Liverpool FC and Everton FC, calling the city home. Visitors can tour the stadiums, soak up the electrifying atmosphere on match days and discover the history of the famous clubs.

I also recommend the Liverpool Ghost Tour to discover the darker side of Liverpool’s history. I went on this tour one Halloween and it was sick! Stops include, the eerie cemetery at Anglican Cathedral, the notoriously haunted Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and Rodney Street – dubbed the most haunted street in Northern England!

2) Beautiful port and waterfront

Liverpool’s Albert Dock is a historic waterfront complex which played a significant role in Liverpool’s maritime and trading history. It even became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004!

The Albert Dock (named after Queen Victoria’s husband) was opened in 1846 and was revolutionary in its construction for the time, utilising cast iron, brick and granite in its architecture.

The dock features grand warehouses with imposing columns and ornate details, all built to accommodate goods such as tobacco and cotton that arrived on large cargo ships from all over the world.

You can find out more about Liverpool’s historical port and waterfront on the Liverpool: Guided City Walking Tour.

After exploring the Albert Dock, carry on walking along the waterfront and check out some of Liverpool’s iconic landmarks such as the Liver Building, the Royal Liver Building and the Pier Head.

Don’t forget to take a selfie with the Beatles whilst you’re there too! 😉

3) Awesome street art

I am a huge fan of street art and find myself seeking it out wherever I travel to! If you’re the same – you’ll LOVE Liverpool’s endless streets of graffiti art. It has a thriving creative industry and reputation for being a hub for artists!

Liverpool is well-known for its vibrant street art scene, with numerous murals and artworks scattered throughout the city. These even include Banksy’s “Love Plane”, which is located on Rumford Street (on a car park wall of all things!).

I recommend checking out the Baltic Triangle for the best street art. It’s an area of Liverpool that has become a hub for creativity and is home to various galleries, studio and venues with streets of colourful murals and graffiti. Artists from around the world have contributed to the street art in this area, creating a dynamic and ever-changing outdoor gallery.

Other street art hotspots in Liverpool include: Bold Street, Duke Street and the Ropewalks.

Visitors can follow in the footsteps of the ‘Fab Four’ with tours of iconic Beatles landmarks, including The Beatles Story Museum and the legendary Cavern Club.

You’ll enjoy stops such as Penny Lane, Strawberry Field, the childhood home of Paul McCartney and The Cavern Club.

But if you’d like to go on a more general tour that has an added Beatles focus, I recommend the Guided Tour of Liverpool and the Beatles.

Beyond The Beatles, Liverpool’s vibrant music scene continues to thrive, with live music venues, concert halls, and festivals showcasing a diverse range of musical talent from all genres.
